Selecting a wedding photographer isn’t like choosing a cake, or a caterer where you can rely on your senses to help you make the right choice. You have to do your homework and research because you won’t know exactly what you get until you see the final product. So, to help you navigate through the planning, here are some tips for helping you choose your wedding day photographer:
*First you need to decide what style of photography you want for your big day…documentary style photography, portraiture style, fine art style photography, edgy-bold, whimsical, romantic etc. Ask yourself what the most important images will be from your wedding day…Is it more important for your photographer to capture a portrait style family pose, or capture your expressions when the two of you are finally alone after the ceremony…your first moments as husband and wife. Decide what your personality is as a couple and that will help define the wedding photography style you want for your day.
*Now that style has been established, look at budget …but remember, your wedding photos are the only thing that you will have to remember your wedding day by so don’t settle for something or someone that isn’t exactly what you want. This is a special day, the extra investment is worth it for something as important as your wedding day images.
Compare different photographer’s packages and consider what they offer within their packages. Does the photographer have a second shooter? If capturing all of the details of your special day is a must for you, this is a very important question. It’s also highly recommended that you do an engagement session with your wedding photographer as well. This is a perfect way to get comfortable with your photographer, and it’s also a chance for your photographer to get to know you and your fiancé as a couple.
Check out what each photographer’s wedding albums are like…this should help you figure out the style of the photographer as well as the quality, standard of the product and their design potential to represent your day the way you want. Because your wedding day is such an important, once in a lifetime occasion, you should make sure that your wedding album is high quality and will last a long time. It’s totally worth it to have your photographer design and order your album for you even if you think you just want the files to make your own album…we’ve heard from so many brides that have said they were set on just getting the wedding day image files and doing it themselves but a year later the CD of images is still sitting in their desk drawer and they never got around to making it! It’s totally worth it to have a professional take care of it for you that way you end up with a stress free, high quality, gorgeous work of art! Let’s face it…in the first few months of your new marriage, you really don’t want to have to be worrying about it!
*And finally, make sure you pick someone that you want to spend the day with! Your wedding photographer will be with you the entire day capturing all of the special moments throughout the day. They need to be able to do this without making you uncomfortable so don’t underestimate the importance of “clicking” with them! And don’t forget to check reviews of the photographer you are interested in. Many brides and grooms-to-be let the pricing dictate who they choose without considering the fact that this person will be present in all of the moments of the day, including the intimate ones so it’s a good idea to meet them before you decide and see how they present themselves. Check to see if they offer complimentary consultations so you can meet them ahead of time!
Remember, your wedding images are going to be your lasting reminder of your special day. Make sure you make the right decision! Happy planning!
Kicking off our Wedding Photography for 2013 was a fabulous February wedding!
About 5 weeks ago we received a phone call from a bride interested in us photographing her wedding…when’s the date?…in 2 weeks! When did he propose?… about 4 days ago! Wow, that is amazing (and quite a job)…planning a wedding in a few weeks time! When we got there, it couldn’t have been more beautiful-Amy & Brian could not have been more perfect together…their day was beautiful, full of love, family & gorgeous details!! One of my favorite images from Amy & Brian’s wedding, was taken outside on the balcony of Ricks Cafe Boatyard ~ Be sure to click on the image below to enjoy their wedding video.
We had such a fantastic turn out at the Muncie Couture Bridal Show last Sunday! We at Kishel Photography just wanted to say thanks to everyone for coming out to see us and thanks to all of the vendors for helping make it even better than last year! We’ve been working with so many awesome vendors over the last few months to pull off this gorgeous event! The Delaware County Country Club was the perfect venue to host all of the creative wedding vendors of the show…not to mention Mindy is the best! She bends over backwards to make sure that every event is perfect! We just love her! We were also so happy to have had another opportunity to work with Perfect Wedding Guide of Indy whose specialty is bridal shows! We’ve been so glad to get to know Tammy and Brian! The brides were all greeted with their smiling faces and then guided into a series of beautifully decorated rooms full of some of the finest local wedding vendors around! Some of our favorite highlights were first and foremost-our Kishel Photography booth! We love the design we pulled off this year! It was so much fun to create something new to give brides a taste of what our photography studio looks like and a feel for our style of wedding photography!
Also at the top of our list of favorites from the day was one of the most creative displays Saturdays Bridal Shop arranged …a kneeling tux proposing to the most beautiful princess wedding dress all lit beautifully by AMS Entertainment with a blue light under the cupcake skirt and lighting up the ring box!
There was custom couture blue champagne, a custom couture candy bar, delectable appetizers, and a fabulous bridal fashion show! Liz Wagner and Tori Hernly did a wonderful job making over the models with hair and makeup fit for a princess. Saturdays fitted all of the bridal models with the most perfect dresses and the tux models had a great time strutting around in their custom fitted tuxes from Saturdays as well! We were so lucky to have Dandelions Flowers and Gifts create some stunning bouquet arrangements for the fashion show models to carry down the runway. They are so diverse in the creations they design…we had classic, chic, modern, vintage, and edgy dresses that they matched flawlessly with unique bridal bouquets!
We had such a great time and we hope all of the beautiful brides enjoyed their day of wedding planning! Thanks to all of the wonderful vendors for helping make this show so fabulous!
PS. If you look closely at the picture, I’m wearing a headband with live pink flowers made by Dandelions! It was so beautiful and matched my sheer, light pink shirt so well! So unique! I just love them!
The Grasso family is one of our most favorite families to photograph. They recently came in for a family portrait session just before Christmas with the goal of decorating the wall in their entry way. You can’t tell from the picture how big the middle canvas is, but it’s a 40X30in canvas print! The whole arrangement looks so good above the doorway. They came in and chose their favorites and together we designed this display to fit with their decor. I quickly snapped this photo on my phone to show you how it turned out! It just adds warmth and richness to the design of their home… A wonderful display to greet every visitor that comes through their door!
I have absolutely adored getting to know this amazing couple! I met Jamie a few years ago when I photographed her sister’s wedding…she was so sweet then & even sweeter now that I’ve gotten to know her more. I love seeing couples that just seem to go well together without having to try. These two just seem to blend flawlessly! After hearing all the stories about these two(and how they got together!)…I’m certain, Jake & Jamie, you two are meant to be together!

Here is a quick peek into last year’s show:
We had such a great time at the Perfect Wedding Guide Bridal show at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indy last weekend! 3 floors of vendors from all over Indiana! What an amazing place! It was our first time in the Scottish Rite Cathedral and we definitely can see why it gets booked up for weddings so quickly! Just gorgeous!
It was really great meeting all of the beautiful brides and we loved meeting all of the wonderful vendors too! One that caught our eye is Marie Gabriel Couture! Their formal wear is fabulous! Their gowns and suits are each like a work of art-absolutely stunning!
Tammy and Ryan from PWG are the best and made sure the day went so smoothly! With all of the hustle bustle and hundreds of vendors I don’t know how they kept everything running so smoothly, but they did!
We got to see some of our favorite vendors we love working with too-AMS and Indianapolis Zoo are two of our absolute favorites to work with! We love seeing familiar faces at events like this!
We heard about a lot of unique weddings from different brides and loved the fabulous ideas they all had for their big day! It was a day full of our favorite things: Wedding gowns, lace, glowing brides and lots of cake! We also noticed there were a lot of awesome grooms out with their brides at this show-even during the playoff game! Way to start things off right guys!
After a long but rewarding weekend, we’re definitely in the wedding mood! Can’t wait until we get to begin our new 2013 season!
We’re so excited to kick off our new year by being a part of the Perfect Wedding Guide Bridal show at the beautiful Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis! We can’t wait to meet all of the lovely brides this weekend! PWG’s Winter Bridal Show is Indiana’s largest and most popular event for brides to be so we can’t wait to be a part of all of the fun this weekend! We might even have a fun little promotion for this year’s brides!
What a fabulous & fun wedding! Ever since their engagement photos, we’ve been looking forward to this couple’s wedding day! The ceremony was held in the brides childhood Catholic Church, she was nervous….he was nervous….but everyone else melted away once Craig saw his bride walking down the aisle. After the ceremony we took the bridal party to this very cool historic train depot for pictures! Such a unique location~ I love how we worked the tracks, the depot & the old train cars! Next we were off to the reception at Willowbrook Country Club. Such a gorgeous venue, all done in black & white with vintage accents. Congratulations Megan & Craig!!
